2 Agenda Workshop group claim and check with me
Finalize evidence and speaker order Work on planner (independently) DO: Present a clear argument analyzing a thematic message through a literary perspective Organize evidence in a clear and purposeful order Meet deadlines in order to complete a larger project in a timely manner HW: Make sure planner will be completed in class tomorrow

3 Timeline Monday Tuesday Complete planner
Workshop group claim and check with me Finalize evidence and speaker order Work on planner (independently) Tuesday Complete planner Start creating PowerPoint (planner must be completed before you can start PowerPoint) Wednesday/Thursday: Work days Friday: Rehearsal day

4 You will need to get approval from me!
Claim workshop In your squads, workshop your group’s claim: Is the thematic message clear? Do you reference specific details or focus? You will need to get approval from me!

5 How can I come up with a universal theme?
What is the author saying about the character? Is their experience typical? (could this happen to you?) What would happen if you (or any person) was in this situation? Is this good (healthy, beneficial, make you happy, etc.)? Is this bad (unhealthy, harmful, dangerous, etc.)? Basically, the message should be either a warning (beware!) or advice (you should do this)

6 Ways to Determine speaker order
Chronological – speak in the order of when each piece of evidence occurred Character by character – focus on one character before moving to another (ie, focus on Daisy, then Jordan, then Myrtle) Example by example – focus on critical moments before moving to another (ie, focus first on parties, then on Gatsby/Daisy’s relationship, etc.)

7 Complete organizer Double check your context
Use those key words! Highlight/ circle them to ensure that you do include them Refer to specifics! Highlight the specifics in your cited evidence Once you completed the analysis, complete your slide picture

8 Negative slide examples

9 Mitty He has day dreams His wife is mean He wants to be important

11 Mity is insecure This part comes right after Mitty’s wife has yelled at him, and he dropped her off to get her hair done. He arrives at the garage to get work on his car, and Mitty doesn’t like how the mechanics behave: “They’re so damn cocky, thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything. Once he had tried to take his chains off, outside New Milford, and he had got them wound around the axles. A man had had to come out in a wrecking car and unwind them, a young, grinning garageman. Since then Mrs. Mitty always made him drive to a garage to have the chains taken off. The next time, he thought, I’ll wear my right arm in a sling; they won’t grin at me then. I’ll have my right arm in a sling and they’ll see I couldn’t possibly take the chains off myself. He kicked at the slush on the sidewalk. “Overshoes,” he said to himself, and he began looking for a shoe store. (Thurber 2). This shows that Mitty is really insecure. He’s insecure because other men are better than me. He especially feels bad that he has to get work on his car. Mitty doesn’t like that the mechanics look at him like he isn’t a “man” because he is unable to fix his own car. By wearing his arm in his sling, it will give a reasonable excuse for why he isn’t fixing it himself.

12 The analysis basically written fully on screen

14 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Walter Mitty lives a secret life He daydreams frequently

15 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Walter Mitty lives a secret life He daydreams frequently The font size is clear and there is a visual, but the visual doesn’t do much to support what is on the slide; information is also repetitive

16 Strong Examples

17 Mitty’s insecurity feeds his daydreams
“They’re so damn cocky, thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything. I’ll have my right arm in a sling and they’ll see I couldn’t possibly take the chains off myself.. (Thurber 2).

18 Mitty’s insecurity feeds his daydreams
“Cocky… they think they know everything” → his perception of other men “A man had had to come out in a wrecking car and unwind them, a young, grinning garageman” → past experience “I’ll have my right arm in a sling and they’ll see I couldn’t possibly take the chains off myself” → plans ahead to avoid these future feelings

19 Mitty’s insecurity feeds his daydreams
“They’re so damn cocky, thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything. Once he had tried to take his chains off, outside New Milford, and he had got them wound around the axles. A man had had to come out in a wrecking car and unwind them, a young, grinning garageman. I’ll have my right arm in a sling and they’ll see I couldn’t possibly take the chains off myself.. (Thurber 2). Mitty focuses on his deficiencies Juxtaposed with the garagemen’s skills His perceptions of other’s judgements feeds his daydreams

20 Post-colonialism Focuses on the unfair power structure in literature
Particularly of white colonizers on native populations Often written by colonized populations (ie Passage to India or Heart of Darkness) Focuses on unfair stereotypes (“savages”) and misrepresentations Key words: Hegemony (Westerners controlling colonized), power, colonial, etc.

22 Tuesday Lab assignments
1st – Lab 107 2nd – Classroom (Laptop Cart 1) 3rd – Lab 227 6th – Lab 130 You will only be able to use a laptop once your organizer is fully completed

23 Tuesday, May 8

24 Agenda Complete planner Start building PowerPoint Intro/Conclusion
DO: Present a clear argument analyzing a thematic message through a literary perspective Organize evidence in a clear and purposeful order Meet deadlines in order to complete a larger project in a timely manner HW: Organizer should be done! Work on PowerPoint

25 Today’s goal: finish outline
Outline needs to be completed before getting a computer Create your own PowerPoint before compiling with your group

26 Intro/conclusion responsibilities
Each person needs to contribute to the intro OR the conclusion Your contribution needs to demonstrate a strong understanding of either your perspective or the novel’s background If you just read the claim, you will barely meet expectations – you will need to do more

27 Intro needs to include Perspective intro Brief description Key words
Any other critical information Background information on the novel; be sure to introduce Characters you will be discussing Major events you will be discussing Main thematic idea One person will need to read your claim as well (this should not be their only contribution)

28 Conclusion needs to include
Restate thesis (this should not be their only contribution) Revisit main points Final thoughts – discuss why this is important

29 Divide it up In groups, decide who is going to contribute what
Larger groups may have to double up (for example, 2 people might need to explain the perspective) Each person needs their own unique slide for their contribution (don’t share slides or you can’t get slide credit for it)

30 Divide up responsibilities
Intro Perspective intro Brief description Key words Any other critical information Background information on the novel; be sure to introduce Characters you will be discussing Major events you will be discussing Main thematic idea Conclusion Restate thesis (this should not be their only contribution) Revisit main points Final thoughts – discuss why this is important

31 Slides are anchors Slides should be a rough outline/reference for what you are saying Remember to change formatting (make font larger) Find the balance: don’t overload the slide with information, but don’t have empty slides either

32 Timeline PowerPoint must be completed by Thursday at the end of class I will be conferencing with you between now and then to check your work Friday is rehearsal day

33 Complete organizer to move to PowerPoint
Double check your context Use those key words! Highlight/ circle them to ensure that you do include them Refer to specifics! Highlight the specifics in your cited evidence Once you completed the analysis, complete your slide picture

34 Wednesday, May 9 & Thursday, May 10

35 Agenda Create/edit PowerPoint
