2. The Printing Press
A mechanical printing device for making copies of identical text on multiple sheets of paper. Before the Printing press: A. monks hand-wrote Bibles in Latin. B. only Priests and clergymen could read Latin. C. The common man had to go to church in order to “read” the Bible – or at least the clergy’s interpretation of it.

3. Johannes Gutenburg
The Printing Press allowed the Bible to be written in the vernacular (native language) and could be produced much more quickly as a result of this new technology. Technology of the Printing Press a. Movable type allowed individual characters to be arranged to form words. B. Johannes Gutenberg is credited with the invention of the Printing Press. i. This allowed for a more flexible process than hand copying.

4. Other major impacts of the Protestant Reformation
a. Secularism – this is the state of being free from religious or spiritual qualities. Secularism can promote science, reason, and naturalistic thinking. b. Individualism – this is a term used to describe a moral, political, or social outlook, stressing human independence and the importance of individual self- reliance and liberty. Individualists promote the unrestricted exercise of individual goals and desires. c. Religious Tolerance – the condition of accepting or permitting others’ religious beliefs which are different or even disagree with one’s own.

Age of Exploration, Scientific Revolution, The Renaissance, and The Reformation all come out of this same period in history.
