Battle of Britain “In the summer and fall of 1940, German and British air forces clashed in the skies over the United Kingdom, locked in the largest sustained bombing campaign to that date”(History.com). France on June 17, quit WWII and left Britain forces to fend for themselves. Germany began to attack Britain's air bases, military posts, cities and towns, however the German Luftwaffe could not beat the Royal Air Force as Britain was more superior in air battle, saving their country from ground invasion of German forces.

Battle of Britain When the Battle of Britain first broke out the politicians in Britain tried to arbitrate with Hitler, however Prime Minister Winston Churchill was able to rally the British and outsmart the politicians. He was able to convince Britain to fight back. Britain had an effective air defense, fighter pilots, and a great military leader; Air Marshal Hugh Dowding Germany wasn’t aware of British vulnerabilities and didn’t plan well They wasted most of July because they believed Britain would surrender, so they didn’t attack until August DID YOU KNOW: The battle received its name from a speech Winston Churchill delivered to the British House of Commons on June 18, 1940, in which he stated "The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin."

Battle of Britain The Germans first attack was quite successful on September 7th. The second on September 15th however failed causing great German military loss. British fighters then attacked quickly in large numbers and shot down the Germans. Hitler suspended the Battle of Britain. “…Both sides suffered heavy losses (an average loss of 21 percent of the RAF’s fighter pilots and 16 percent of the Luftwaffe’s fighter pilots each month…)”(History.com).

Operation Sea Lion Overview: Operation Sea Lion was the Nazi Germanys code for a proposed invasion of the United Kingdom at the time of the Battle of Britain. The invasion was a last resort, it was postponed and never carried out. The invasion required air and naval superiority which Germany was never able to achieve.

Operation Sea Lion Combatants: United Kingdom, Nazi Germany, Poland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Kingdom of Italy, and Free French Date: September of 1940 Hitler was aware of the dangers with this plan he attempted to proceed anyway to ensure that Britain would fall “The aim of this operation is to eliminate the English Motherland as a base from which the war against Germany can be continued, and if necessary, to occupy the country completely” –Hitler. REMEMBER: THIS OPERATION WAS NEVER ACTUALLY CARRIED OUT
