1 What was it like for immigrants in Britain?
Message just for you! What was it like for immigrants in Britain? L/o: To use different sources of information to explain how immigrants lived in Britain in the 17th and 18th century What immigration? Think Geography! Why do people migrate to another country? E.G. Why may people migrate to Spain?

2 Who came to Britain in the 16th and 17th century?
Jews: A large religious group which today live all around the world and have their own Jewish state of Israel. Judaism is a religion and therefore Jews will also have a nationality as well which depends on where they were born. Just like Protestants and Catholics, Hindus and Buddhists etc. Huguenots: These were French protestants who were pushed out of France in the 16th and 17th century and came to Britain because it changed to become a protestant country (under Henry VIII) Free black communities: These may have been ex slaves (something we will learn about after Christmas) or ex soldiers from the empire who had fought for the British and then come to live in Britain. What about Spain? During the 16th century Spain remained strictly Catholic and therefore there was very little tolerance of other religions. A court was set up during the ‘Spanish Inquisition’ which would punish any people not following the Catholic faith. So, this was not a great place for Jews to be and during this time a law was passed to remove all Jews from Spain if they would not agree to become Catholics.

3 What impact did Jews and Huguenots have on London?
Task: 1) Copy this table then read through page 72and 73 in pairs and write down the positive contribution of immigrants in London. 2) Discuss why some people not have liked them. Positive impact of Jews and Huguenots Why some people may not have liked them Became market sellers and money lenders People may have resented owing interest on money borrowed to ‘foreigners’ 20 minutes for this task: Do as much as you can!

4 What was life like to Black communities emigrating to Britain?

Leisure? Lifestyle? Is the image in each picture positive or negative or neutral? Extra tricky! Overall what do you think life was like for black people in Britain in the 16th and 17th century? Explain your answer! You have 30 minutes for this task!
