Trade Embargo of 1807 Embargo: an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country. Singed into law by Jefferson The USA stopped trading with GB and France to “punish” them for impressment of sailors and naval blockades. Ultimately hurt Northern traders (NYC & Boston) in the US. Repealed in 1807

Non-Intercourse Act Forbade trade with France and Britain; however President could reopen trade when either France or Britain lifted restrictions War Hawks Southern congressmen favored war, even though it hurt the east Henry Clay (D-R, Kentucky) and John C. Calhoun (D-R, South Carolina)

American Setbacks In August 1814, British Forces Sailed into Chesapeake Bay and capture Washington D.C. They burn the White House and the Capitol Madison and Congress barely escape

Treaty of Ghent Signed on Dec. 24, 1814 ending the War of 1812
The War ended in a stalemate, where no party gained or lost any territory. The issue of impressment was not addressed, but faded on its own.

Results of the War Natives lose support of the British
Economic growth in the North (Industrialization grows) Increased Nationalism (Star Spangle Banner is written) and national unity. New hero: Andrew Jackson Defeats British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814.
