Light Sources for AMANDA/IceCube Cross-Calibration
Kurt Woschnagg Integration Workshop Berkeley, March, 2005
2
AMANDA in-situ light sources
Where are they? How bright are they? YAG not bright enough for interstring measurements. Closest string (17) useless.
3
Can AMANDA light sources be seen by String 21?
YAG laser - all strings: fugghedaboudit Nitrogen lasers - LM I (str1): too dim - LM II (str5): ~350 m LEDs - string 13: >400 m away - string 18: ~400 m away - string 14: ~400 m away - string 19: ~350 m away DC sources can be seen m - EUV (313nm, str9): maybe - Rainbow (str7): not likely flashers shallow string Not looking good

Can AMANDA light sources be seen by String 21?
5
Can String 21 flashers be seen by AMANDA?
Closest strings see the light but is is highly scattered At 400 nm: λeff ~ 20 m λabs ~ 110 m 300 m shallow string 200 m 100 m
6
What about next year? Up to 12 new strings, closer to AMANDA
Plenty of IceCube strings within range of AMANDA light sources Plenty of IceCube flashers within range of AMANDA strings Standard Candle laser Brighter than nitrogen lasers in AMANDA Deploy in center of AMANDA or closest hole Plenty of cross-calibrating light
