Energy Sources
2
What is a fuel? concentrated chemical store of energy
energy is usually released by combustion (reaction involving oxygen) exception is “nuclear fuel” which is energy stored in the nucleus of an atom – the energy is released when nuclei are joined (fusion) or split (fission)
3
Examples of fuels
4
Original energy source
The Sun is the original source for a lot of our energy sources
5
The Sun as energy origin
Sun > heats air > air convects > wind Sun > plants > buried > heat/pressure/time > coal exceptions Moon > tides > tidal radioactive decay > geothermal Nuclear fission/fusion > nuclear
6
What is energy? forms – thermal, kinetic, light, sound, chemical, nuclear, strain, gravitational energy transfers make things happen e.g. candle burning chemical -> light/thermal
7
What is the difference in fuel consumption between developed and developing countries?
8
Energy Sources renewable and non-renewable
