1 Independence of India and Vietnam
SS7H3.a – Describe how nationalism led to independence in India and Vietnam. Bell-ringer - In your own words, what is colonialism? What is Nationalism? How are these words related to each other?

2 Important Words to Know - India
Nationalism –loyalty to those with whom they share common history, customs, and origins. Indian National Congress (1885) and Muslim League (1906) – first two groups formed to work for rights of Indians. Rowlatt Act (1919) – gave the British power to send Indians to jail for up to 2 years without a trial. Dominion – control or the exercise of control.

3 Important Words to Know - Vietnam
Indochina – France-controlled Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in the 1900s. Vietminh League – group that had Vietnamese independence as its goal. Geneva Conference (1954) – conference to end French involvement in Vietnam. US alarmed by thought of Ho Chi Minh ruling Vietnam. Republic of Vietnam – after the Vietnam War, the name of Communist Vietnam.

4 Important People to Know
Mohandas Gandhi – Leader of civil disobedience trying to gain India’s independence from Britain. Ho Chi Minh – Communist leader who gained independence for Vietnam from France. Lord Louis Mountbatten – British colonial leader who decided to separate India into Hindu and Muslim sections.

5 Work Session We will either read the article out loud or silently depending upon what the majority would like to have done. Make sure that you are underlining important information as you read. When finished, work on the RAFT instructions.

6 Work Session Yellow – You are an Indian or Vietnamese Native
Writing to a Family Member or Friend A Letter Describe in a two paragraph letter why the foreign invaders are in your land, what they are doing while there, and the impact/effects it has on you, your family, and your people. Include your opinion about European colonialism.

7 Work Session Blue – You are an Indian or Vietnamese Native
Writing to a Foreign Governor of India or Vietnam. A Letter In two paragraphs, explain the effects colonialism has on you, your family, and your people. Also explain why you think their reasons for being in your country are not an excuse for their treatment/use of the land & people. Conclude by explaining what you think should be done to fix the situation.

8 Work Session Green – You are a French or British Soldier
Writing a Diary Entry In one page, describe why your country sent you to your new post ( Vietnam or India) and why your homeland colonized your new post. Explain what you see are the effects of your nation colonizing there(consider the European perspective for imperialism/colonialism) and how the natives are responding to European colonialism.

9 Closing Share your writings with the class.
