Community Targets #12-15 12. I can define communities.
13. I can define an organism’s niche. 14 I can define habitat. 15. I can explain how changes in a habitat can affect the biodiversity of an ecosystem.
2
Communities All the living things living in an area
3
a clown fish’s habitat is in a sea anemone
Habitat: all biotic & abiotic factors in the area where something lives Example a clown fish’s habitat is in a sea anemone
4
Changes to habitat often reduce biodiversity
Example climate change is destroying coral reefs
5
Niche: the role of an organism in it’s community
Example A tree-dwelling animal that eats eucalyptus leaves.
6
every species has a specific position in it’s community
many species may occupy the same habitat but the niches of those species differ to avoid competition
7
Relationships in Communities
Symbiosis: long-term relationship between 2 or more species in a community 3 types of symbiosis: mutualism, commensalism, & parasitism
8
Mutualism A relationship is which both species benefit + +
+ + Example: Oxpecker bird & gazelle
10
Example: Barnacles on a whale
Commensalism A relationship in which one species benefits and the other is NOT affected + 0 Example: Barnacles on a whale
11
Parasitism A relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed + -- Example: Mosquito and human
