1 Common Urban Models

2 Land-use - how the land use of a city is put into categories –
Definitions Land-use - how the land use of a city is put into categories – Residential (housing), Commercial (shops and offices), also industrial (factories), agriculture (farming) open space, derelict land. Public: owned by everyone Urban model - an idea or theory of what a city is like. Urban structure - how the land use of a city is set out. CBD- Central Business District, “downtown”

3 The site of a settlement is the land on which it is built.
There are a number of different types of sites which have been used for settlements from earliest times. Site Characteristics Defensive Difficult to attack e.g. hill-top or island Hill-foot Sheltered, with flat land for building and farming Gap Lower, more sheltered land between two hills Wet point Close to water in a dry area Dry point On higher, dry area close to wet land e.g. marshes or flooding rivers Route centre Focus of routes (e.g. roads) from surrounding area Bridging point Where bridges can be built over a river

4 Look at this diagram and tell which type of site it is:
Hill-foot  Gap  Wet-Point  Dry-Point  Route Centre

5 The importance of individual site features changes through time.
The Answers Settlement 5 is a Hill-foot site because it is is sheltered and flat for building and farming. Settlement 1 is a Gap site because it is a lower and more sheltered site between two hills. Settlement 2 is a wet-point because it is close to water in a dry area. Settlement 3 is a dry-point because it is a higher, drier site above wetland. Settlement 4 is a Route Centre because it is a focus of routes (roads and river) in this area. The importance of individual site features changes through time.

6 Describing site checklist
To describe a site, you should mention its: Relief: height - below 100m = low; above 100m = high slope - flat or gentle/moderate/steep slope land forms - e.g. plain, valley, hill-foot, hill-top, gap, dry-point site, coast. Drainage (water features) - e.g. wet-point site, rivers, lakes, marshes. Resources: things I can get from this place Climate and Biome : weather conditions/vegetation Hazards: what type of dangers do I have to prepare for Possible Transportation Routes: can I move things in or out of this place :
