2 Martinique Mountain Rescue Training Session
Martinique Mountain Rescue Training Session. Xavier Ledoux's photograph of a mountain rescue training exercise in Rivière Mitan, Martinique (French Caribbean), tied for first place in the 2004 WEM Photo Contest. Dr. Ledoux is an anesthesiologist at St. Martin Hostpital (French West Indies) and mountain rescue physician in the French Alps. In the French rescue system, medical care is provided on-site. Martinique is mountainous with a variety of canyons and canyoneering is increasing in popularity. Specially trained and equipped physicians take part in most of the canyoneering rescue operations. In tropical mountains, helicopters are no or little help, so local rescuers must be prepared to accomplish long and difficult terrestrial rescue operations.
