Things You’ll Learn What is Conductive and Non-Conductive
Basics of computer programing How to use the MaKey MaKey
3
A note about this engagement…
This engagement is very open ended. This means you have a lot of freedom in what you do and accomplish. You are expected to be working the entire time and not be a disruption to the rest of the class.
4
Background Information
The MaKey MaKey is a programmable circuit board. Circuit boards are everywhere. Cars, phones, iPods, toys, and computers all use circuit boards. The circuit board controls the electrical device.
5
Background Information
Click the image below and learn what MaKey MaKey is. Cite at least five (5) different ideas that you could use for your MaKey MaKey project. You may use anything in the classroom or you may bring items from home.
6
Background Information
Like a computer key, the MaKey MaKey allows you to complete a circuit and send information with a pulse of electricity. Using MaKey MaKey you can turn many objects into a key. The objects used with MaKey MaKey must conduct electricity. Metal objects like wire or aluminum foil work great. Other examples that could work are: Bananas, apples, and most fruits Flowers Hands and fingers Clay
7
Background Information
All of the items listed in the previous slide all have one thing in common that helps them conduct electricity. They all contain water! Water contains small particles of other materials that help it conduct electricity.
8
Research Define the following in terms of electrical conductivity
Insulators Semiconductors Semimetals Metals Give an example of each
9
Do It & Research Check out the MaKey MaKey kit & Example Activity Board Be respectful to the MaKey MaKey and the alligator clips-it’s your responsibility! The color of the alligator clips you use does not matter Your kit should have The MaKey MaKey board Seven (7) alligator clips
10
Do It & Research Connecting the MaKey MaKey.
Click the picture below to learn how to connect the MaKey MaKey. Make sure the link is opened in Chrome not Internet Explorer. Follow steps 1 through 5
11
Do It & Research It’s time to try out your controls.
Connect the MaKey MaKey to the computer and connect the alligator clips to the Example Activity Board. Remember to be respectful of the alligator clips and the MaKey MaKey After you’ve connected everything click this link to try them out in different games and activities.
12
Your Turn! You will need to bring in or supply your own materials for MaKey MaKey! Materials you may use: Fruit Clay Foil Water (be careful!) Have another idea? Try it out!
13
Do It & Research Check out Scratch
Be sure to open the link in Chrome not Internet Explorer Username: shawmsstem Password: coyotes You can combine Scratch and MaKey MaKey
