Bell Challenge Invitation to Imitate Review the model sentence and the imitation sentence. Use your *READER’s EYES and *WRITER’s EYES to write your imitation sentence. READER’s EYES – Study the patterns and conventions the writer of the model sentence uses. WRITER’s EYES – Write about the world you know. Invitation to Share and Celebrate If it is your turn, read your imitation to the class twice. If it is another student’s turn, listen. Clap for fellow writers after the second reading.

Completion Read close chapters 4 “Alone Down South” & chapter 5 “The Fugees Are Born” Purpose for reading: Luma’s character, Luma’s girl’s soccer team, when Luma first meets the refugees, and the birth of the boys soccer team. After reading, respond to the following short answer questions using the R.A.C.E. strategy: What characteristics & values did Luma notice in the refugee boys’ pick-up soccer matches that attracted her to these players? What does the chapter title, “Alone Down South,” lead readers believe the chapter will be about? Is that expectation fulfilled? What other, perhaps more informative, titles could be given to this chapter? Chapter 5 focuses on the first soccer tryouts. How does the fact that St. John wrote a chapter about Beatrice and her boys, help readers follow the developments in this chapter?

Quiz: Outcast United Chapters 4 & 5 Quiz
You will take a 7 question multiple choice quiz on chapters 4 & 5. You may not use the novel to complete the quiz. You will have 20 minutes to complete the quiz. After 20 minutes all grades are final, so use your time wisely. Use the R.A.C.E. strategy to answer the 2 short answer questions.

Assessment: Central Idea, Supporting Details, & Accurate Summaries
You will read the article “Snow Way” by Beth Geiger and complete 6 question assessment. You must annotate appropriately on the text to receive full points. You have 1 short answer question & you must use the R.A.C.E. Strategy. You will have 25 minutes to complete the assessment, after this time the grades will be final.

Complete activities for Monday – Thursday. Monday: 1 – 5 ONLY write the sentence if it is sentence fragment (correct the fragment). 6 – 10 Write each sentence & add the correct punctuation. Tuesday 1 – 6 ONLY write the name of the type of sentence for each number. 7 – 10 revise number 1 – 4 changing the sentences to either interrogative or declarative sentences, Wednesday 1 – 10 Write each sentence, correct the capitalization & punctuation, and identify the type of sentence. Thursday Rewrite the passage, correcting all capitalization & punctuation errors.
