What is culture? The word culture, with its Latin root meaning "to cultivate“. How are culture and cultivation alike?

What is culture? Culture –Beliefs, customs, practices, and behaviors of a particular nation or group of people Cultural Trait – an idea of doing things that is common in a certain culture: ex. Language, values, food, clothing, religion (Fast Write) How do we learn cultural traits? (Fast Write) Can cultural traits change over time?

Values Values are ideas about what in life seems important.

Norms Norms are a set of expectations of how people will behave in various situations. (Fast write) What are the norms in the United states? In school, for example, how are you expected to behave?

Institutions Institutions are the structures of a society within which values and norms are transmitted. Examples: school, family, clubs Fast write) What institution do you go to daily or weekly? What values and social norms do you show? How are these values and norms taught to you?

Artifacts Artifacts—things, or aspects of material culture derive from a culture's values and norms. (Fast write) What artifacts in your life describe you?

What are culture regions?
Culture Regions – places where people share cultural traits such as language or religion Culture regions can cover an entire country A country might also have many different cultural regions Ex. French Canadian culture in Quebec, Canada Culture regions can also cover more than one country Ex. People who practice Christianity Cultural Hearth is the place where cultural traits develop

How do cultural traits spread?
Cultural Diffusion – the spread of cultural traits from one culture to another Ex. In the 1500s, Spanish explorers brought horses to America from Europe Tomatoes were brought to Europe from the Americas Jeans became popular in America and then spread to Asia and Europe Diversity – cultural variety (Fast Write) Why do we adopt parts of other cultures? (Fast Write) How is culture spread? Who spreads culture?
