How to conjugate in the present tense
Regular –ar verbs How to conjugate in the present tense
2
Infinitives All verbs end in either an –ar, and –er, or an –ir when they are infinitives/ unconjugated. In order to say that a particular subject is doing that action however, you need to conjugate it. We’ve seen this with ‘ser’ and with ‘tener’ already. The good news is that regular verbs follow a pattern so we can learn one set of endings and apply them to many verbs!
3
Examples of regular –ar verbs:
Alquilar, andar, comprar, contestar, descansar, dibujar, enseñar, escuchar, estudiar, hablar, llegar, mirar, montar, necesitar, pasar, pasear, practicar, preparar, sacar, tocar, tomar, trabajar, usar
4
How to conjugate: When conjugating a regular –ar verb, take the –ar off the end of the infinitive: EJ) hablar habl estudiar estudi practicar practic What remains is called the root or stem of the verb. Una raíz:
5
How to conjugate, cont. Now, time to make a foldable!
Based on your subject, add the appropriate ending to your root. Yo: -o Nosotros: -amos Tú: -as Vosotros: -áis Él, Ella, Usted: -a Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes: -an
6
¡Practiquemos! Opposite your foldable, draw 5 blank verb charts and choose 5 –ar verbs. Make sure to define them and practice each conjugation. EJ) hablar: to talk, to speak Yo: hablo Nosotros: hablamos Tú: hablas Vosotros: habláis Él, Ella, Ud.: habla Ellos, Ellas, Uds.: hablan
7
What do they mean? When you use the infinitive of a verb, you are expressing ‘to________’ (to talk, to study, etc.) When you conjugate a verb, you change it to go with a subject: Yo hablo: I talk/ Tú hablas: You talk/ etc. Without conjugations, we would sound like robots or cavemen! I to talk… You to talk? ;)
8
Más práctica: Try out these conjugations and write what they mean:
1. tú, pasear 2. los maestros, enseñar 3. yo, preparar 4. mi amigo y yo, tocar 5. la clase, estudiar
9
Now add detalles… The subject and conjugated verb are the basic building blocks of a complete sentence. { Yo hablo. / I speak.} is a complete sentence but it lacks context. Using the 5 verbs you just conjugated, create context by adding details. For example, include information that answers the questions What? When? Where? How often? EJ) Yo hablo español en la clase todos los días.

¡Jugamos con dados! For this game, borrow 2 dados from Señora or use the dice app on your iPad. If using the iPad, choose only 2 dados and make them different colors. As a pair (or group of three if no one is sitting next to you), make a numbered list of 6 of the regular –ar- verbs. One of your dice will represent these 6 verbs. The other one represents the 6 different conjugations. EJ) Estudiar yo Pasar tú Dibujar él, ella, Ud. Alquilar nosotros Hablar vosotros Andar ellos, ellas, Uds. So if you roll 3 & 6 you need to do the verb dibujar in the ellos form and have to say dibujan out loud. *Decide ahead of time which color dado represents what. Take turns rolling los dados and saying the conjugation out loud. When you feel comfortable with the list of 6 verbs, make a new list of 6 more!
