Presentation on theme: "What is the material moved by erosion called? sediment"— Presentation transcript:

1 Erosion Natural process that moves weathered rock & soil from one place to another

2 What is the material moved by erosion called? sediment
This may include pieces of rock or soil or the remains of plants or animals.

3 Deposition happens where agents of erosion drop or lay down sediment
Deposition happens where agents of erosion drop or lay down sediment. It changes the shape of the land. (The word ‘agents’ means the processes or ways that erosion occurs.) Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition work together is a cycle that wears down & builds up Earth’s surface.

4 What causes the different types of mass movement?
Erosion by Gravity Mass Movement: What causes the different types of mass movement?

5 Mass movement happens when gravity pulls sediment downhill
Mass movement happens when gravity pulls sediment downhill. Mass movement can be rapid or slow and is caused by gravity.

6 Landslides are the most destructive of the four types of mass movement.
Describe: Rock & soil slides quickly down steep slope Where does it happen? Sometimes where road builders cut through hills or mountains

7 Landslides Special fences are sometimes put in place along roadsides to prevent the slide from landing on the road or cars driving along.(above)

8 Mudflows are very dangerous.
Describe: a mixture of water (as much as 60% of the flow), rock & soil moves rapidly downhill What may trigger it? Heavy rains in a normally dry area, Earthquake movement

9 Mudflows (Mudslide)

10 Slump occurs when one huge mass falls together.
Describe: Mass of rock & soil suddenly slip down a slope in one huge mass What makes it happen?  When water soaks the bottom of soil rich in clay

11 Slump

12 Creep is very slow movement.
Describe: Barely noticeable, you eventually see the effects of the slow movement in telephone poles, fence posts & trees tilted or leaning at odd angles What causes creep? From freezing & thawing of H2O in cracked layers of rock beneath the soil

13 Creep

14 Summary Questions: Write your answers in complete sentences that restate the questions. 1. What force causes all types of mass movement? 2. Which type of mass movement is most destructive? 3. Which type of mass movement is the slowest? 4. Which type of mass movement consists of a large percentage of water? 5. A fence running across a steep hillside is tilted downhill and forms a curve rather than a straight line. What can you infer happened to the fence? Explain.
