2. What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is part of the immune system and helps destroy microorganisms that enter the body.
It is closely related to the circulatory system because both systems move liquids through the body, and both contain white blood cells.

4. Functions It absorbs the tissue fluid that collects around cells.
It absorbs fats from the digestive system and transports them to the circulatory system.
It filters dead cells, viruses, bacteria, and other unneeded particles from the tissue fluid and then returns it to the circulatory system.
It helps fight off illness and infections.

5. Lymph
Water, white blood cells, and dissolved materials such as salts and glucose, leak out of capillary walls and into spaces that surround tissue cells.
That fluid is called tissue fluid.
Cells absorb the materials they need from tissue fluid and then release wastes. 90% is absorbed.
About 10% of the tissue fluid is absorbed by the lymph vessels is called lymph.

The lymphatic system arms a network of lymph vessels that look similar to the blood vessels in the circulatory system.
Lymph vessels absorb and transport lymph.
The lymph is pushed through the lymph vessels by contractions
of the muscles.

Clusters of small, spongy structures are called lymph nodes.
Lymph nodes store white blood cells that attack and destroy the trapped particles, which are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and pieces of dead cells.
Large groups of lymph

groin, and the armpits.

They swell because your body increases its production of white blood cells to fight that infection.
The swelling disappears when the infection is gone.

Lymphocytes are white blood cells that destroy pathogens. Pathogens are infection-causing microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria.
Bone marrow is the spongy center where red and white blood cells, including lymphocytes, form.
Lymphocytes include B and T cells.

T cells mature in the thymus gland.
The thymus is the organ of the lymphatic system in which T cells complete their development.
After immature T cells move from the bone marrow to the thymus, they develop the ability to recognize and destroy body cells that have been infected by microorganisms.

The spleen is an organ of the lymphatic system that recycles worn-out red blood cells and produces and stores lymphocytes.
The spleen also stores blood and platelets.
If a person is injured and loses a lot of blood, the spleen can release stored blood and platelets into the circulatory system.

Your tonsils are cluster of lymph tissue on the sides of your throat.
They help protecting your body by trapping and destroying pathogens that enter through your mouth or nose.
You can live without tonsils.

Damage to the lymphatic system from injury or surgery can prevent tissue fluid from draining into lymph vessels.
Recall that the action of your body muscles pushes lymph through the lymph vessels.
Inactivity cause lymph buildup and swelling.
If the cells of your tonsils become infected, you have tonsillitis—an inflammation of the tonsils.

The lymphatic system helps maintain your body’s homeostasis by regulating fluid buildup around cells.
It supports the circulatory system by cleaning fluids and replacing them in the bloodstream.
