BE SAFE STAY SAFE MATERIAL HANDLING July 2017 Janitor Closet Safety Simple as A-B-C Never fill mop buckets more than ¾ full. They will be lighter and less likely to spill. Never reach over something to lift another item. Either move what is in your way or go around it. Don’t twist your body while handling a load. Move your feet instead. Never carry loads that block your view. Use hand trucks or roll heavy equipment (floor polishers or vacuums) or heavy containers. A B C A B C Keep organized – use goggles w/ chemical filling Keep floor clean and free of all debris & clutter Place chemicals on lower shelves. Avoid top the shelf Lifting light things carelessly and heavy things the wrong way can cause back injuries. When you lift, use proper technique. Get close to the object Gloves may improve grip Ensure loads are lightweight Avoid lifting from the floor Bend at the waist Use both hands Have a good grip Keep close to body Push up with legs Use forearms & thighs to rest load Get help, if needed Keep it tucked in Pivot with your feet, not your back
