1 Investigating Ecovative-An Application of Green Chemistry
How Ecovative are You? By: Kathe Blue Hetter

2 What is Green Chemistry?
›Green chemistry is the science of designing safer products and processes for a more sustainable future. ›Pro-active, innovative science which targets pollution prevention at the source, stopping or reducing waste before it even begins.

3 Making more green packaging
Steelcase was looking for a process to make a “greener” packaging for their furniture. Along came the product EcoCradle from Ecovative. The company uses agricultural waste and mixes it with fungal mycelium to make mushroom materials. Mushroom packaging The company grows the packaging, then heat treats to stop the mushroom from growing Use 1/10th of the energy as polystyrene.

4 Cradle to Cradle Sustainable product standards certification:

5 Are Mushrooms the new Plastics?

6 Ecovative Design Ecovative is making material for packaging, insulation, insides of surfboards and so much more…. What will you design?

7 Student’s products

8 Connections to the NGSS
HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants. HS-ETS1-3: Evaluate a solution to a complex real-world problem based on prioritized criteria and trade-offs that account for a range of constraints, including cost, safety, reliability, and aesthetics, as well as possible social, cultural, and environmental impacts.
