1 The Rock Cycle

2 What is the rock cycle? Shows the possible ways one type of rock can slowly change to another type of rock.

3 The Rock Cycle

4 Energy in the Rock Cycle
The rock cycle is driven by different types of energy that slowly change rock. The changes in the rock cycle usually take thousands to millions of years.

5 Sedimentary Process to create a sedimentary rock. Weathering Erosion
Deposition Compacting Cementing

6 Weathering vs Erosion Weathering Erosion
The breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals Removal of soil and rock from one location, to another location where it is deposited.

7 Examples Wind breaks down rocks and moves sediments.
Rain slowly dissolves rock and moves sediments. Ice Wedging- Snow melts and runs into cracks, freezes, expands, and breaks rock. Glaciers scrape rock and carry sediment as they move Natural disasters Heat from the sun causes rock to crack or buckle from pressure

8 Igneous Process to make Igneous rocks: Melting Cooling and Hardening Crystallization

9 Metamorphic Process to make metamorphic rocks: Heat Pressure
