1 A Review of Properties and Changes
SNC2D1

2 Physical Property A physical property is a description of a substance that does not involve forming a new substance. Colour Smell Texture Density Taste State

3 Physical Change Recall that a physical change is a change in which no new substances are produced. The can is still aluminum. The ice is still H2O.

4 Chemical Property A chemical property is a description of what a substance does as it changes into one or more new substance(s).

5 Chemical Change In a chemical change, the substances you have after (the products) are different than the substances you had before (the reactants). When iron reacts with oxygen, it creates iron oxide (Fe2O3), or rust.

6 Chemical Change In a chemical change, the substances you have after (the products) are different than the substances you had before (the reactants). When iron reacts with oxygen, it creates iron oxide (Fe2O3), or rust. Rust is the product; iron and oxygen are the reactants.

7 Evidence of a Chemical Change:
1) Change in colour

8 Evidence of a Chemical Change:
2) Change in temperature/light

9 Evidence of a Chemical Change:
3) Production of a solid precipitate

10 Evidence of a Chemical Change:
4) Production of a gas (odour)

11 Gas Tests We can test for the type of gas produced because different gases have different chemical properties.

12 Oxygen Place a glowing splint into the test tube. If it relights, oxygen was present.

13 Hydrogen Place a burning splint into the test tube. If a small “pop” (explosion) is heard, hydrogen was present. Hydrogen is highly flammable.

14 Carbon Dioxide Carbon dioxide will extinguish a burning splint. It will also turn limewater (a solution of calcium hydroxide) “milky.”
