Panel: Building the NRP Ecosystem - What Campuses Need To Support Them Being Involved In The NRP
Dana Brunson XSEDE Campus Engagement co-manager Asst. VP for Research Cyberinfrastructure Director, High Performance Computing Center Oklahoma State University
2
Challenges into Opportunities
Not enough research computing or networking people on campuses Not enough collaboration between campus IT and research (especially where research computing is not in central IT) Not enough collaboration between networking experts and research computing facilitators (Also need more collaborations with information security and library communities)

How we got there - state & regional collaboration:
OK State: 100G at border, multiple 10G connections to research computing (including DTNs), deploying 100G FIONA How we got there - state & regional collaboration: 2008: NSF EPSCoR RII Track 1: $15M, OCII formed via MOU 2010: NSF EPSCoR RII C2 (OU+OSU+TU+LU+Noble+OneNet): $1.17M 2013: NSF EPSCoR RII Track 1: $20M, OneOCII (expanded OCII) 2013: NSF CC-NIE “OFFN” (OU+OSU+LU+OII+UCO+OneNet): $500K 2014: NSF CC*IIE CI Engineer (OU): $400K 2014: NSF CC*IIE (OneNet+GPN): $130K 2017: NSF CC* “MORe OFFN” (RSU, SE, SWOSU, NSU): $334K 2018: GPN-RP Collaboration – FIONAs + Community of networking and research computing people How did we do this? People joining the weekly calls – it’s really that simple (not really, they also have to care and pitch in once in a while) Challenge: Researcher computing staff is small and doesn’t have extra time to do much extra evangelizing of the network after the culture of firewalls. Many schools have even fewer people than we do… OneOCII: Created via MOU in OK’s NSF EPSCoR RII Track , then expanded under OK’s RII Track Every academic in the state gets to use resources for free! EPSCoR RII’s no longer emphasize CI as much as they used to. GPN CI committee has been meeting for about a decade – so relationships were in place when the RP opportunity came up and James came on board. James took OneOCII model to GPN – and it took everything up several notches.
