1 Title: Sedimentary Rock
Welcome Year 8 Sit in your allocated seat, get out your equipment and write the title and date, and begin the starter. Date: 22 November 2018 Title: Sedimentary Rock Starter: 3 MINS Discuss with your partner What happens to the bits of rock broken off during weathering?

2 I will learn: How sedimentary rocks are made. ALL: State the features of sedimentary rock. I will apply my learning by: MOST: Explain the process of sedimentation. Literacy Focus: Reading and writing Use Key words: Cementation, sedimentation. SOME: Analyse the affects of different cementation compounds on the strength of sedimentary rock I will evaluate my learning by: Completing a quick quiz on sedimentary rocks.

3 3 types of rock Metamorphic Igneous Sedimentary

4 Rock fragments are transported via wind, water and ice
Discuss with your partner the following questions: How are rocks transported by wind, water and ice? Which method of transport do you think will move the largest rock pieces?

5 Apply your learning: In your books…
Small rock fragments and animal shells sink to the bottom of the ocean Over a long period of time these layers build up The pressure from the water above and the building layers turn the sediment into rock Apply your learning: In your books… Draw a simple story board or diagram summarising the 3 main steps of sedimentary rock formation. Unscramble the following examples of sedimentary rock: EOTSMILEN HLKAC SSDENANTO EXTENTSION: Explain why is sedimentary rocks formed at the bottom of rivers are likely to compromise of larger particles.

6 Making your own sedimentary rock
We are going to be modelling how sedimentary rocks are made. We will explore how different components (sediments) affect the strength of the sedimentary rock. After this experiment you should be able to explain the affects of cementation on the formation of sedimentary rock.

7 On the mini-white boards
Put these steps in the right order: compaction, sedimentation, erosion, cementation, weathering, transport. In a cliff made of sedimentary rock where is the oldest rock: At the top In the middle At the bottom Why are fossils often found in sedimentary rock?
