1 Scientific Measurement
Adapted from Addison Wesley Chemistry

2 What is the difference between…
Quantitative and Qualitative data and measurements?

3 International System of Measurements (SI)
Qualitative Quantitative Descriptive Nonnumerical Definite form Numbers Units

4 How do you write Scientific Notation?
36,000

5 Scientific Notation Written as a coefficient and 10 raised to a power (exponent) 3.6 x 104 = 36,000; positive exponent: the # > 1, the decimal will move to the right equal to the number of the exponent. 3.6 x 10-4 = ; negative exponent: the # < 1, the decimal will move to the left equal to the number of the exponent.

6 What’s the difference Between….
Accuracy and Precision?

7 Accuracy, Precision and Error
Accuracy: a measure of how close a measurement compares to the actual or true value Precision: a measure of how close a series of measurements are to one another Error = accepted value - experimental value Percent error = Error/accepted value x 100%

8 Significant figures Count….. Do not count…… All non-zero numbers
Zero’s between non-zero numbers Zero’s to the right of the non zero numbers with a decimal Do not count…… Zero’s to the right of a non-zero number without a decimal Zero’s to the left of a non-zero number with a decimal

9 Sig Figs in calculations
Multiplication/Division: The answer should be written with the least number of significant figures as the numbers being calculated. Addition/Subtraction: The answer should be written using the numbers being calculated with the least decimal place.

10 What are the SI units for….
Length? Mass? Volume? Density?

11 SI units of measurement
Length: Meter: m Volume: Liter: L Mass: Gram: g Density = mass per volume: g/mL or g/cm3 or g/L 1 mL = 1 cm3 Temperature: Celsius or Kelvin : 0C = Kelvin
