Deforming the Earth’s Crust: Basic Ideas pg. 113
4
What is Weathering? Breaking down rocks, soils, and minerals by contact with Earth’s atmosphere, life, and water.
5
What is Erosion? Transport of solids, such as soil, rock, and sediments, from one location to another.
6
How are Weathering and Erosion different?
Please discuss this with your neighbor for 30 seconds and write your answer in your notes. Weathering is the breakdown of materials, while Erosion is the movement of materials.
7
As materials such as rock are weathered and eroded, the sediments get deposited, (come to rest) in straight, horizontal layers. What is Deposition?
8
Sedimentary layers are deposited in a time sequence, with the oldest on the bottom and the youngest on the top The Law of Superposition
13
What is STRESS? The amount of force on a given material
14
What is Compression? Stress that occurs when forces act to SQUEEZE an object
15
What is Tension? stress that occurs when forces act to STRETCH an object
16
What is Deformation? When stress changes the shape of a rock.
Two ways that rock can be deformed— Bending OR Breaking
