1 World War I A Total War

2 Economic Impact of WWI European countries realize that a modern, mechanized war will require the effort of all its citizens. Total War: war that puts all resources of a nation into the war effort. Increased government involvement with the economy All countries involved use a conscription, or draft system Often sends men to war and women to work in the factories. Governments installed more taxes and borrowed money to pay for the war. Rationed food and products like gasoline. Set prices on some goods and prevented strikes.

3 Propaganda Propaganda: the distribution of information aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of people Information may not always be true or accurate Will often target people’s emotions and basic understanding to persuade them.

4 Propaganda and WWI Total war also meant controlling public opinion
Many restrictions were put on things like books and art that may spread beliefs contrary to the war effort. Many ideas and beliefs were spread throughout each country to encourage people to support the war. This is an example of Propaganda

Countries like Great Britain would try and portray the Germans as barbaric and evil, and the same was true of German propaganda on the British Often there would be stories of German acts of cruelty during the war. Most times these were exaggerated or even made up
