3 Events that lead to the War
The French and Indian War (1754) created debt for the English. The British wanted colonists to pay their share. So they began to enforce taxes that they had never enforced before. (Salutary Neglect) The colonists won’t be taxed unless represented in parliament. The British sent troops.

4 Proclamation of 1763 Prevented the colonists from getting lands in the west, won from the French. The British wanted no problems with the natives. The British sent troops to enforce it. The colonists ignored it.

What Was it? What Happened as a result? A direct tax Taxed imported goods 3 penny tax on tea (The most popular drink in the colonies) People protested “taxation without representation” Leaders organized a boycott Women’s groups became involved. “Spinning Bees” Troops were stationed in the colonies to enforce them.

8 Boston Massacre Colonists taunted British Guards
What Was it? What Happened as a result? Colonists taunted British Guards Guards fired, killing 5. The King wanted to bring colonists to England for a trial. (Why?) Colonists formed COMMITTEES OF CORRESPONDENCE. (COMMUNICATION NETWORK)

9 Boston Tea Party What Was it? What Happened as a result? Colonists dumped 18,000 pounds of tea in Boston Harbor. Passed the Intolerable Acts Declared Martial Law

10 The Intolerable Acts What Was it? What Happened as a result? Quartering Act: let the British house soldiers in private homes. Placed Boston under Martial (Military) Law Closed Boston Harbor Assembled the First Continental Congress Created a statement of colonial Rights They Said: Colonists should use force if the British Do!!! Minutemen: Stockpiled Arms

11 Lexington and Concord What Was it?
What Happened as a result? British troops went to Lexington and Concord to get weapons and arrest John Hancock and Samuel Adams. 70 Minutemen met 700 British troops The colonists chased the British back to Boston

12 Then… The Olive Branch Petition- Members of the Second Continental Congress urged the King to restore harmony between England and the Colonies. The king rejected it and sent a naval blockade.

13 Common Sense by Thomas Paine
A pamphlet arguing for American independence. Convinced many Americans to support creating their own republic.

14 The Declaration of Independence
Written by Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia. Borrowed ideas from John Locke. “life, liberty and property” became… “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”

15 Key Ideas in the D. of I. Governments get their power from consent of the governed. People may abolish governments that threaten their “inalienable rights”. All men are created equal.
