Objective Provide a brief overview of the Task Force
Review recent reports and recommendations Discuss the status of the 2018 Task Force Report

Background Task Force established by Energy Policy Act of 2005
Chaired by the NRC Composed of 14 Federal Agencies, 1 State Organization (non-voting member) Important vehicle for advancing issues related to domestic security of radioactive sources Submitted reports to the President and Congress in 2006, 2010, and 2014

Issued August 14, 2014 3 main topical areas: advances in the security and control of radioactive sources status of the recovery and disposition of radioactive sealed sources progress in the area of alternative technologies 3 new recommendations cybersecurity financial planning for disposition transition to effective alternative technologies 4

Provides the status of open recommendations and actions Issued every 2 years (publicly available) Used to prioritize future Task Force activities and initiatives Most recent Implementation Plan issued on 2/1/2017 (SECY ) 33 recommendations and actions have been completed 9 remain open 5

Develop GTCC waste disposal capability Reduce regulatory impediments to the return of disused sources to suppliers Evaluate disposal options for disused sources (multiple recommendations) Enhance support of research and development of certified Type B containers for use in source recovery efforts Progress in the area of alternative technologies (multiple recommendations) Assess the adequacy of and coordinate strategies for preventing and mitigating cybersecurity vulnerabilities Reevaluate protection and mitigation strategies 6

2014 Recommendations Closed Recommendation - Example
2014 Recommendation 2: “The Task Force recommends that the NRC evaluate the need for sealed source licensees to address the eventual disposition/disposal costs of Category 1 and 2 quantities of radioactive sources through source disposition/disposal financial planning or other mechanisms...” Status: Complete. The NRC staff completed a scoping study and rulemaking plan to determine whether additional financial planning requirements are necessary for end-of-life management of certain radioactive sealed sources (see SECY and SECY ). 7

Interagency effort Describe significant developments since the last report, such as: Closure of recommendations Changes in disposal environment for disused Category 1 and 2 sources Accomplishments (e.g., issuance of revised NRC Concentration Averaging Branch Technical Position) Discuss progress on open recommendations Present any new recommendations 8
