Chapter 9 Section 2: Speed and Velocity
Key terms: speed, average speed, instantaneous speed, velocity, slope Key concepts: How do you know an object’s speed and velocity? How can you graph motion?

Calculating speed If you know the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time, you can calculate the speed of the object. Speed = distance/time It needs a unit, usually meters/second or km/hr

Average speed Total distance/total time = average speed Confusing?

Imagine a cyclist Imagine a cyclist travels 32 km for 2 hours. Then he travels 13 km for 1 hr. What is his average speed?

First Total distance? 32 km for 2 hrs and 13 km for 1 hr 32+13= 45 km
Total time? 2+1= 3 hrs Total distance/total time= average speed 45km/3 hrs= 15 km/hr

Instantaneous speed The rate at which an object is moving at a given instant in time

Velocity Fun fact: sloths (seen right) often mistake their own arms for tree branches and fall to their deaths by trying to grab onto themselves

Describing velocity When you know the speed and the direction an object is moving, you can calculate velocity. Take note, velocity MUST include a direction. Velocity: speed in a given direction Why is this important? Air traffic control, trains, storm tracking, etc

Graphing motion You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance versus time. Time is on the x-axis, distance on the y-axis The steepness of the line is the slope Slope = rise/run

OMG NOW WHAT, MS. FUENTES? Now: work on the assessments for these two sections, compare your notes to your book. Read, students, absorb knowledge into your brains and regurgitate it back into your notes in the form of assessment-answers. THEN: STUDY FOR YOUR SOCIAL STUDIES EXAM. NOW. IN CLASS. OR STUDY FOR SCIENCE. OR: ASK ME FOR HELP WITH YOUR RESEARCH PAPER AND/OR EXPERIMENT OR: SET UP YOUR NOTES FOR THE REST OF THE CHAPTER YOU do not have time for time-wasting. You are important and need to educate yourselves while you are young so you can save us from impending country-wide disasters with your super-educated brains.
