Welcome to Weather, Climate, & the Oceans!
Bellwork 1/19 Welcome to Weather, Climate, & the Oceans! Why did you decide to take this class? What are you interested in learning about?
4
Who am I? Ms. Mueller I teach Biology, Weather & Climate, and Space Science Three things about me… 1. I love music. 2. I speak German. 3. I love the Badgers!
5
Unit 1: The Oceans Seafloor Mapping/Bathymetry Salinity
Seafloor Sediments Ocean Thermohaline Currents Oceanic zones & life
6
Where are the oceans? 5 oceans:
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern
8
That being said… It is important to remember that our oceans are all connected to form 1 “World Ocean”.
9
Distribution of Land vs. Water
10
Pacific Ocean is the largest basin
11
What is at the bottom of the ocean?
12
Ocean Topography Topography: description and arrangement of physical pieces of a landscape
13
…how do we know? Bathymetry = measurement of ocean depths and charting of shape or topography of the ocean floor Sonar SOund NAvigation and Ranging transmits sound waves toward the ocean bottom and then intercepts the echo reflected, and a clock measures the time interval
14
Single Beam vs. Multi-beam Sonar
Single beam: one sound signal from one source Multi-beam: many sound signals from one source
15
Satellite Altimeter measures the topography of the oceans surface
The ocean floor affects the topography of the ocean surface
16
Two Views: Transect— “side view” Relief— “top view”… shows depth by colors
17
Bathymetry Lab Work with a partner Obtain an “Ocean Floor” box
Follow the directions on the lab to figure out what the bottom of your Ocean Floor looks like
18
How much do we know about the bottom of the ocean?
Not much! “To date, we have explored less than five percent of the ocean.” --NOAA WHY?
19
“Just how little do we know about the ocean floor?”
Something you found interesting Something you found confusing Something you have a question about
20
Exit Slip Where do you prefer to sit? (Front, back, middle, side, ect)
With regard to Oceans—what are you interested in learning about?
