The Ancient Puebloans found the Canyons an Ideal place to plant crops and raise families.

Located: Chinle, Arizona Inhabitants: Hopi and Navajo Indians How long: people have been living in the canyon for more than 5,000 years. First families built Pitt Homes that were replaced with better homes. People thrived until the mid-1300s when some Indians left. They are not sure why.

The Navajo Indians settled the 4 sacred mountains and raised families and livestock. The farms and Hogan's are still visible from the rim. Later it was named a National Monument by Herbert Hoover. It has more than 84,000 acres of land and still has more than 40 families within the park boundary's.

Today Navajo families make homes, grow crop, and farm in the Canyon. Today they still have 900 year old ruins such as: White House Ruins Mummy Ruins The Navajo families tell their families story by drawing petroglyphs on pottery.
