In a civil case, a court settles a disagreement between two parties to recover damages or receive compensation.

The plaintiff files a complaint to recover damages or receive compensation.
Case can be heard by judge or jury.
Case can be appealed to the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

7. What is a plaintiff?
The party who initiates a lawsuit
before a court.

8. What is a defendant?
The party who is required to answer the complaint of a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit.

10. What are damages?
Refers to the money paid or awarded to a plaintiff following their successful claim in a civil action.

11. What is an appeal?
One's intention to take the matter to the next higher court with jurisdiction over the matter.

12. Could you be brought into a civil case and a criminal case over the same matter?
YES
