7 Responsiveness Is #1 IT Goal, Not Cost Cutting
Efficiency, cost control IT innovation, flexibility, responsiveness Reduce IT costs Shift costs from maintenance to new projects 47% 24% Contribute to business process optimization Simplify corporate compliance processes Move to “IT as a service” model 39% 30% 28% Improve responsiveness to business 58% What are your IT organization’s top objectives during 2008? In surveying IT organizations of all sizes worldwide, EIU found IT consistently trying to respond to two common but often competing imperatives: Efficiency and cost control—reflective of the reality that today IT is largely viewed as utility. In fact, 47% identified cost reductions as a top IT priority for 2008. Flexibility and responsiveness to the business—58% identified this as a top IT business priority for 2008, and 28% have a long-term goal of moving to an “IT as a business service” model IT broadly recognizes a compelling need to change the way it operates in order to manage these competing priorities. 58% are in the process or have already completed an organizational transformation project, and another 29% are considering one. (EIU) 72% of respondents at all levels see value in engaging in IT transformation, with half of these personally advocating for change. In addition to recognizing change as a prerequisite for better IT efficiency and a vehicle for gaining business relevance, most also see personal benefits in the form of skills development, greater ability to focus on what they do best, etc. On the other hand, IT remains very conscious that it will be measured first and foremost on its ability to deliver its existing services more efficiently. Approximately 45% thought the greatest benefits of IT transformation to the business would be cost savings, and smoother, more flexible operations—the types of typical CIO careabouts we saw earlier. Yet, a smaller group still saw the primary business benefits in “CEO” terms: increased sales (20%) and profits (27%) Similarly, the greatest concerns regarding undertaking IT transformation had to do with overall cost and with managing change will continuing existing operations. 10 A Two-Tier Approach to Architectural Change
IT’s Top Project Priorities Through 2008 Consolidate IT Infrastructure Improve Data Security Virtualize Servers, Storage Adopt SOA Early movers: conservative, incremental approach Fast followers: many looking at consolidation, virtualization, SOA at the same time Source: The Economist global survey, Jan./Feb. 2008 10

The Promise of SOA Architects believe that SOA can help businesses respond more quickly and cost-effectively to changing market conditions They’ve sold SOA to the business by suggesting that through exposing key business functions as reusable services SOA enables: A more consistent approach to the implementation of business policies (better) Improved Resource Utilization (cheaper) Improved Business Agility (faster) Source:

12 The Promise of Virtualization
Architects believe that virtualization can help businesses to get more value not only from hardware and software infrastructure but also from the labor required to keep your systems up and running In justifying requests for funding they tout: Higher efficiency – power, cooling, real estate (cheaper) Improved resilience – disaster recovery (better) Increased agility – rapid provisioning (faster) Before Virtualization After Virtualization Source:

13 Virtualization Impacts the Data Center Technology, People and Process
Infrastructure Virtual Machine the new ‘Atomic Unit’ Higher Density CPUs, More I/O Asset Consolidation Applications Dynamic Movement of VMs / Applications Remote/Mobile Access to Centralized Assets Greater Emphasis on Security, Trust Operations Requires Continuous Availability/Provisioning Reduces Visibility into ‘Hidden’ Resources Breaks Current Organizational Model 13

14 Virtualization is Part of a Journey
Consolidation Improved Utilization, Efficiency Virtualization Improved Flexibility, Responsiveness Automation Policy-based Adaptive Infrastructure Dynamic Service Automation “Virtualization is no longer an early adopter phenomenon”2 Semi-Automated Provisioning Static Service Automation Agility “More than half of companies are well down the infrastructure consolidation path”1 Storage Virtualization Application Virtualization Network Virtualization “Virtualization is a major enabler for Infrastructure and IT Automation”3 Server Virtualization Branch Infrastr.
