3 BACKGROUND Mmadinare village lies in the North Western side of the Copper and Nickel Mining Town of Selibe Phikwe. (Mine since closed – 2015) Precisely 22km away from S/Phikwe In 1969 and 1970 RST ordered people of Mmadinare to move out from their lands (masimo) and cattle post (meraka) to give way to “Developments” meaning mining activities. People welcomed the so-called developments and religiously moved without demanding any compensation.

4 RESULTANT DEVELOPMENTS
Quality schools were built Health facilities Government Offices opened to offer services to the local population Shopping centres were opened Small industries were started Employment creation Generally more services became accessible to people from surrounding villages

5 RESULTANT DEVELOPMENTS
Change of life style The town offered a larger market for agricultural produce A Railway line was constructed – used by farmers to transport cattle to BMC (Previously cattle were tracked to Serule 60 km away)

6 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
EIA was not carried out when the mine started People of Mmadinare who were displaced by the mining activity were not compensated Political wing of Government was used to persuade them to move No fund set up for the rehabilitation of the mine post mining (Stabilisation fund)

7 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Inhabitants were never told about the sulphur emissions and the impact thereof on the environment Inhabitants of Bobonong in the lower motloutse river were never told about contaminated water discharged into the river from the mine Motloutse river sand degradation due to extensive mining

8 EFFECTS OF DISPLACEMENTS
Affected communities do not have certificates of rights for ploughing land Certificate of rights is now a requirement for farmers to access Government assistance schemes (Farming) The length of stay not recognised for Government schemes Land board now treats them as squatters

9 EFFECTS OF MINE CLOSURE
Loss of employment – loss of disposable income No market for agricultural produce

Increase in crime Societal conflicts Family life disintegration
