4 Background: Panthertown Valley
Panthertown Valley = 30 miles of trails Most of the trails were created by Carlton McNeill in the 90s Panthertown hosts hikers, campers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, etc.

5 Background: Friends of Panthertown
501(c)(3) nonprofit Environmental conservation sector Started in 2005 under the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance Works with U.S. forest Service to protect Panthertown valley Goal is to gather supporters, volunteers to maintain Panthertown valley

6 Challenges Need for volunteers to maintain trails 30 miles
Without maintenance, trails could not be enjoyed by publics

7 Opportunities Raise awareness and involvement
Partner with WCU departments/organizations Promote FOP on campus Student-specific involvement Trail workdays with student/campus organizations Internship position

8 Goals Position Statement: Overall:
To increase cooperative volunteerism and environmental awareness by partnering with WCU departments and organizations. Overall: The goal of our Spring of 2015 campaign is to increase the number of volunteers from WCU students for Friends of Panthertown by the end of the Spring 2015 semester, and to establish and maintain partnerships with specific WCU departments and organizations to continue permanent student volunteerism.

9 3 Areas Increasing Cooperative Volunteerism:
Establish two days designated for trail maintenance Reserve through Service Learning Center one van each service day Fill vans each service day with volunteers (20 people) Establish and Maintain Partnership with: Parks and Recreation Department Base Camp Cullowhee Environmental Science/Clubs Biology Club Service Learning Implement Internship with Parks and Recreation Department

10 Objectives To increase cooperative volunteerism with WCU by 20 students before May 1, (Action) Establish two days designated to trail maintenance Panthertown Valley for WCU students to volunteer before May 1, (Action) To reserve and fill (10 people) one van for each service day (Saturday, March 28 and Wednesday, April 22) through the Service Learning Center. (Action)

11 Objectives Continued 4. To establish and maintain partnerships and communication with WCU: Parks and Recreation Management, Base Camp Cullowhee, Environmental Science Department and sub-sets, Environmental Health Department and sub-sets, Biology Club, Eco-Cats, and the Service Learning Center by May 1, (Awareness) 5. Send out survey to targeted WCU groups and receive a 10% survey response rate by March 25, (Attitude) 6. To implement and inform WCU Parks and Recreation Management of one internship for Friends of Panthertown to be filled by May 1, (Action and Awareness)

WCU Students and Recent Graduates 1. Strategy #1: Promote volunteerism while researching what motivates students to want to volunteer 2. Tactics: Send out survey B. Campus Departments and Organizations 1. Strategy #2: To partner with campus departments and organizations in order to provide a consistent flow of volunteers for Friends of Panthertown. 2. Tactics: arrange 2 trail work days, reserve van for trail work days, put FOP on list in Service Learning Center, Class info meeting for P&R Dep., add event to BCC calendar for Fall 2015
