ENT Fife Malawi Project
Project initiated by Sheffmed and ENT Fife ENT Fife keen to assist in Malawi Visit to ENT Malawi February 2016 Project set up Ungweru: hope in the light

Malawi Country of 16.5 million people in southern Africa.
1 ENT surgeon and 1 Head and neck surgeon. Based in Blantyre, the country’s main business centre Big historical link with Scotland

NHS Fife Initial Visit Nurse and I visited last February
Trying to assess what was required Not what we thought was required We don’t want to parachute in to do operations “Give a man a fish and he feeds for a day, teach him to fish and he feeds for the rest of his life”

Needs Simple Bottom up Shelves – trays – organise theatre – more efficient lists Not fancy kit (microscope graveyard...) Maintenance: screwdrivers, bulbs Training: Nurses Clinical Officers Surgeons

Clinical Officers not appropriate for visit Nurses need to be able to do!

Set up Ungweru board with University Charitable status through this Scottish Government: Scotland Malawi Partnership Glasgow College

Where do we go from here? Nursing staff Identified 2 nurses
Planning visit for 3 months University of St Andrews visiting scholars Can do things! Created a curriculum and will certificate in ENT Nursing Planning for next visit: ward nurses

Where do we go from here? Medical Staff Registrar going through MTI
Glasgow College assistance Taken surgeons through it before Will be based between Fife and Dundee Clinical Officers Course run in Blantyre Theatre skills (e.g. Myringoplasty) Diagnostic Skills
