New Deal FDR program to bring America out of the Great Depression was known as “New Deal” Said Americans needed the 3 R’s… Relief, Recovery & Reform Relief: Open more soup kitchens etc. to help homeless Recovery: The many new programs created to put people back to work building roads, dams, managing forest land etc. (TVA, PWA, CCC) Reform: New laws passed to change things so that another Great Depression would never happen again (FDIC, SEC)

Social Security Act FDR is re-elected and declares America will get a “2nd New Deal” The U.S. was one of the only industrialized countries not to have some form of pension program for the elderly. The Social Security Act provided pension, unemployment insurance as well as insurance for work-related injuries.

Supreme Court Opposition to the New Deal
Not all American’s approved of the New Deal Supreme Court said some of the programs were unconstitutional so they were repealed This upsets FDR greatly FDR proposes a plan to add 6 new Justices to the Supreme Court so he can take control of the court. Outrage from many Republicans and Democrats, upset the checks and balances, bill was rejected

Other Opposition to the New Deal
Huey Long a Socialist Senator from Louisiana supported his “Share the Wealth” program which proposed high taxes on big business. Wanted monies redistributed to the poor. He thought the New Deal didn’t do enough Ran for President against FDR but was assassinated

Eleanor Roosevelt, the 1st, 1st Lady
First to hold press conferences, to speak before a national party convention, to write a syndicated newspaper column, to be a radio commentator Instrumental in convincing President Roosevelt to appoint more women to government positions Worked to break down racial and gender barriers Took action as a First Lady and that tradition has continued ever since
