3. Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
Targets:
Write improper fractions as mixed numbers. Write mixed numbers as improper fractions.

4. Vocabulary
Proper Fraction: A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator.
Improper Fraction: A fraction where the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator.
Mixed Number: A sum of a whole number and a fraction.

5. Rewriting Improper Fractions as Mixed Numbers
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number in the mixed number.
Write the remainder as the numerator over the original denominator. This is the fraction in the mixed number.

6. Example 1 Change the improper fraction to a mixed number.
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number. The remainder goes over the original denominator.
Simplify.

7. Rewriting Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions
Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
Add the numerator to the product.
Write this number as the numerator and keep the original denominator as the denominator of the improper fraction.

8. Example 2 Change the mixed number to an improper fraction.
Multiply the whole number by the denominator. Add the numerator to the product. The denominator stays the same.

10. Exit Problems Write as a mixed number in simplest form.
Write as an improper fraction.
