1 Introduction to Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Section 4.1 Introduction to Fractions and Mixed Numbers

2 Fraction A number that represents a part of a whole.
It consists of a numerator and a denominator. Numerator represents the number of equal parts of a whole. Denominator is the total number of parts that make up the whole.

3 Fraction

4 Types of Fractions A PROPER FRACTION is a fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator. An IMPROPER FRACTION is a fraction whose numerator is more than the denominator.

5 Example Given the fraction determine which is a proper fraction and which is an improper fraction.

6 Mixed Numbers A number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.

7 Geometric Representation
Writing the value of a proper fraction, improper fraction and a mixed number in diagrams.

8 Geometric Representation
Writing the value of a proper fraction, improper fraction and a mixed number in diagrams. The fraction 3/8 in geometric form.

9 Geometric Representation
Cut the figure into equal pieces, based on the denominator. Fill in the correct number of pieces, based on the numerator. Create a geometric representation for

10 Example Create a geometric representation for

12 Example Write the fraction.

13 Converting : Improper Fraction to Mixed Number
Use long division, numerator ÷ division. The answer on top will become the whole number. The remainder will become the new numerator. The denominator will stay the same.

14 Example Convert to a mixed fraction.

15 Converting : Mixed Number to Improper Fraction
Given : whole number, numerator and denominator. Multiply whole number with denominator. Add result with numerator. Place result in the numerator, keep the denominator.

16 Example Convert to an improper fraction.

17 Example Given the geometric representation write it in proper fraction, improper fraction, and mixed number form.
