In both the pictures, the whole is divided into two parts.
But in picture B, the whole is divided into two equal parts.

When a whole or a collection is divided into two equal parts, each part is called one half of the whole. .
We represent this as 1/2.

When a whole or a collection is divided into three equal parts ,each parts is called one-third of the whole.
We represent this as 1/3.

When a whole or a collection is divided into four equal parts,each part is called one-fourth.

11. NUMERATOR
In a fraction, the top number tells us how many equal parts have been taken for consideration.We call it the Numerator.

In a fraction, the bottom number tells us into how many equal parts a whole [a collection]has been divided.We call it the Denominator.
