Site Based Preconstruction – Enabling Work
Enabling works are preparations to make a building site ready for construction. It covers activities from site preparation, creation of access routes, and the installation of facilities like security fencing, ramps, and placing of signs.
2
Access and Egress Routes
Egress = Exit All construction sites need planned access and egress routes for both workers and construction deliveries – large trucks, cranes and lorries plus hazardous loads/materials.
3
Pedestrian access / Safety
Traffic and pedestrians should still be able to get to where they need to be without entering the construction site.
4
Installing Temporary Supports
Temporary Works are ‘parts of the works that allow or enable construction of, protect, support or provide access to, the permanent works and which might or might not remain in place at the completion of the works.’ Scaffolding Tower Crane Supports. Large cranes need supports constructed before they can be erected and used.
5
Falsework Structures which need to be built in order to support the construction of the actual building and will later be removed. Trench Sheets – used to support the sides of a trench preventing collapse.
6
Protecting Existing Services
Before building can take place the contractors must ensure that any existing services are protected from damage. Any damage can be both dangerous and expensive. Breaking a gas main could be deadly, cutting electrical cables and water mains can cause problems for the site and other households. Site plans with cables etc drawn on them Talk to energy companies Talk to local planning office. Mark location of services on site. Train staff and alert them to presence of services.
7
1. Explain why access and egress routes need careful panning before construction.
2. Explain how temporary supports are used in construction. 3. List three temporary supports. 4. Explain how can damage to existing services be reduced?
