1 10-13-17 Identifying IV and DV Quiz
Comprehensive Science

2 Do Now: Answer in your science notebook
In your own words, define the following terms: Independent variable Dependent variable

3 Student Work: Identifying IV and DV practice
Lesson Objective: I can identify an independent variable and dependent variable Instructions: Answer the questions independently and quietly. When you are finished, wait quietly and read a book.

4 Exit Ticket Directions: Identify the independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV) for each scenario.

5 Do Now Prepare for the quiz. Set up your privacy folders
Sharpen your pencils, put away everything except your pencil and a silent reading book Set up your privacy folders

6 Quiz Instructions 15 minutes to complete the quiz.
Read the directions carefully. No talking No getting up without permission Keep your eyes on your own work When you are finished, raise your hand and Mr. Santos will come to collect your quiz. Then, silently read.

7 HW Review: What type of Investigation?
Observational, because she is simply making observations about the tissue of the celery and not comparing it to anything else. Comparative, because he is comparing the number of stomata on a hibiscus leaf versus an ivy leaf. Experimental, because he is changing the temperature of the potatoes and measuring the effects on enzyme activity. He also has a control group Experimental, because she is changing the pH levels and measuring if there is an effect on bean growth. She also has a control group. Comparative, because she is comparing how the worm moves under different conditions. (Yes, this is different from what I told you previously. I apologize for my mistake!) Observational, because he is simply making observations about the traits of each food sample, in this case, whether it had starch.

8 Practice: Types of Investigations Game
In assigned groups of 3-4, each group will be given a bag of paper. First, take the pieces of paper that say “Observational Study”, “Comparative Study”, and “Controlled Experiment” and place them on your desk. Put the rest of the paper back into the bag. Wait quietly until all groups are ready.

9 Instructions You will be playing a game against one another. Groups will attempt to place the statements under the correct headings. The first group that can correctly place the statements wins. When a group is done, 1 member will write their group number on the Smart board. Mr. Santos will walk around to check group answers in the order listed on the board. If a group is not completely correct, one member of the group must erase their number from the board and the group will fix their answers. When the group believes their answers are corrected, one member will re-write their number at the end of the list. The game will continue until the top 3 groups are identified or until time runs out.

10 Controlled Experiment
Game Answer Key Observational Study Comparative Study Controlled Experiment What do gorillas eat? What is the germination rate of an apple seed? How many students at SCA live in Riverview? How long can an earthworm survive above ground? What are the frequency differences between a trumpet and trombone? How similar are the nests of bald eagles and golden eagles? What are the similarities and differences among elephants and tapirs? How does the orbit of Pluto compare to other dwarf planets? What is the proportion of males to females in this classroom? How does sleeping affect memory How does amount of sunlight affect the activity of snakes? What is the affect of pesticide usage on ant colony growth? What is the affect of water pH on clothing?
