Suppression of magnetic order in nanoparticles
Gavin Lawes Department of Physics and Astronomy Wayne State University The complex magnetic structures giving rise to substantial magnetodielectric effects in certain materials, including Mn3O4, appear to be completely suppressed in nanoparticles. This may limit the incorporation of novel magnetic materials into nanomagnetic devices. This can potentially be attributed to the random pinning of surface spins in the ordered state. Mn3O4 Bulk Nanoparticles * Bulk * Nanoparticles GOAL: To develop techniques to control or passivate surface spins to minimize their disruptive effects. The two lower temperature transitions to complex magnetic order in bulk Mn3O4 (asterisks) are completely absent in nanoparticles. No clear dielectric anomaly at magnetic transition in Mn3O4 nanoparticles.
