1 Gravity Notes Part 2

2 What are the other effects of gravity?
Projectile motion When you throw a ball it does not drop straight down Instead, the ball follows the path below

3 What are the other effects of gravity?
Projectile motion When you throw a ball it does not drop straight down Instead, the ball follows the path below

4 What are the other effects of gravity?
Gravity and other forces cause this arc formation Throwing Force Gravity

5 What are the other effects of gravity?
Objects in free fall versus objects in projectile motion Fall at the same speeds Hit the ground at the same time

6 Which will hit the ground first?
Projectile Motion Gravity projectile Monkey and a Gun

7 Weight Mass = amount of matter in an object Weight = force of gravity on an object Weight changes with gravity but mass does not!

8 Imagine Miss Falk on different planets:
Weight on Earth = 110 lbs Venus = 90% Earth’s gravity  _______lbs. Mars = 38% Earth’s gravity  _______lbs. Jupiter = 250% Earth’s gravity  _______lbs. 99 42 275

9 What factors affect gravity?
Gravity is not unique to Earth Universal gravitation A force of gravity exists between all objects in the universe All objects attract one another

10 What factors affect gravity?
Sometimes we feel this attraction and a lot of times we don’t…WHY? Mass Objects with greater mass have greater gravitational force

11 What factors affect gravity?
Why are we pulled to the Earth and not the other way around? Earth has a much greater mass and so a much stronger gravitational pull.

12 What factors affect gravity?
Why do the planets orbit the sun? The sun’s mass is so great that its gravitational pull is strong enough to keep the planets locked in place.

13 What factors affect gravity?
Distance As distance increases between 2 objects, the attraction becomes weaker. As distance decreases between 2 objects, the attraction becomes greater.

14 What factors affect gravity?
Distance Consider a spaceship traveling from Earth to the moon.
