Born in 1902 in Salinas, CA Attended Stanford University but never graduated Moved to NYC in 1925 to pursue writing career Worked as a reporter and a brick layer

3 During WWII was a war correspondent (reporter)
First novels were not well-received Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 – never published again Last years of life were spent in NYC and Sag Harbor with third wife, writing, and traveling Steinbeck was a very private person Died in 1968 of heart disease / heart attack Had two children with 2nd wife

Fourth novel, Tortilla Flat (1935), gained critical acclaim Of Mice and Men (1937), adapted for stage and film The Grapes of Wrath (1939) is considered his masterpiece The Pearl (1941) is often considered his last great novel
