19. Social Security Number and Drivers License You must complete registration with DVS before applying for a Social Security Number or a NC Drivers License. For Social Security Number: F-1 students only eligible if approved for employment. J-1 students eligible without employment. When eligible, students must present to Social Security Administration: 1.Verification letter (visa status/job) issued by DVS 2.Required supporting documents Social Security Administration staff will be at International House (dates & times to be announced). Beginning in early September, trips to SSA occur every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Please arrive at International House by 9:45 a.m. For Social Security Number and Drivers Licenses: WAIT 10 business days after entering the U.S. and registering with DVS before applying. 17

If you are a non-Duke sponsored J-1 Student (i.e. Fullbright, IIE, AMIDEAST, etc.) you must schedule an appointment with your DVS advisor directly to complete your registration.
