Momentum/Impulse 12/13/16
2
Define momentum in your own human words.
Leave space for physics definition. momentum= Mass times velocity, inertia in motion
3
On what does momentum depend?
A roller-skate and a Mac truck roll down a hill… Which one would you step in front of to stop it? Why? Which one is going faster? What if the roller-skate was going really fast and the truck was going really slow?
4
So.. It has to do with mass and velocity.
p=mv units Defined: Mass times velocity, inertia in motion My definition: “umph”
5
How is momentum changed?
Push harder more momentum Push for a longer time more momentum Called impulse I = Ft units = Ns I = ∆p F∆t = m∆v Ns = kg m/s kg m/s2 s = kg m/s Impulse is also abbreviated as J
6
Derive p =mv I = F∆t I = ma∆t I = m (v/∆t)∆t I = m∆v
I = ∆p = m∆v = F∆t
