Momentum
2
Newton’s 1st law of motion:
An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest unless acted on by an outside force.
3
Objects in motion have momentum.
Momentum tells us how difficult it is to stop an object.
4
You are playing football. Which lineman would you rather go against?
5
You are playing baseball
You are playing baseball. The pitcher throws the ball too low and it hits you in the leg. Which picture would hurt more?
6
Momentum depends on: Mass: Velocity: more mass = more momentum
more velocity = more momentum
7
Momentum = mass x velocity
p = mv Momentum is a vector since it has both magnitude and direction. Momentum is measured in kg·m/s
8
A 10 kg ball is thrown at 40 m/s. What is the momentum?
p = mv p = 10 x 40 p = 400 kg·m/s
9
What is the mass of a ball thrown at 30 m/s if the momentum is 600 kg·m/s?
p = mv 600 = m x 30 m = 20 kg
10
What is the velocity of a 20 kg ball with a momentum of 300 kg·m/s?
p = mv 300 = 20 x v v = 15 m/s
