What is dyslexia…… The word ‘Dyslexia’ is a Greek word…’difficulty with words’. It’s been around for hundreds of years! Some people think it’s just about reading and writing but it can affect your life in many ways

Gemma is dyslexic and this is how it affects her…
I have difficulties reading, writing, spelling. I have some difficulties with maths. Sometimes I find it difficult to concentrate. I get letters or numbers mixed up. I have problems meeting deadlines or being on time. I can be quite forgetful. Have good and bad days. But I’m really good at subjects like art, music, drama, sports, building/designing.

Do you know anyone with dyslexia?
Remember that while they may struggle with some areas, people with dyslexia can find other aspects of learning easier. Why not offer to help them if you know they are struggling? People with dyslexia can be very clever and do amazing things. They are often very creative.

Where to go if you want help?
Firstly you should talk to your parents or teachers and don’t be afraid to say you are having trouble with something at school If they aren’t sure what to do, you can ask them to call the British Dyslexia Association helpline on as they can give friendly advice Websites as well are useful.
