Hello, my name is Andy Schmidt and I’m responsible for the Chicago NAP.
I’ve been responsible for the NAP since 1994 and have seen a great deal of change since we start off as an NSF node.
The Chicago NAP is fairly unique in that is serves as an exchange point for both ISPs and Higher Education site. As the previous talk illustrates, because Chicago is the host for STARTAP.

2. What is the Chicago NAP ATM based exchange point
Port speeds of DS3, OC3c, and OC12c
Each customer gets a full mesh of PVCs
No ingress policing, i.e., UBR service
Little to no traffic loss due to congestion

3. Chicago’s General Status
104 connections - peak load 2.4Gbps

Most using OC3
Large move to OC12s
Explosive growth in colo/housing
3M square feet of collocation space created
Approaching 100 customers -- We have been growing at a steady rate of about 2-4 new connections every month.
About 90% of our business is customers installing OC3c. These are either upgrades from DS3 or new installs.
Our customers demographics illustrate this trend. We do see about about 3 or 4 new OC12 coming up in the next 6 months. Most everything else, about 10 customers, are on OC3c.

We have a very consistent growth rate of new customers in Chicago and I’m sure we will maintain our place as one of the top tier exchanges for some time. We usually add 2-3 new new per month, but last month we turned up 6 new OC3s.
Here is a list of some of the recent additions to the Chicago exchange point.

We’re very consistent at Chicago with very little outage, knock on wood.
We anticipate the new year, like ‘99, will see many new OC3s, but we also expect the OC12 traffic to grow significantly.
